How to Measure Your Umbrella for a Replacement Canopy
A damaged or worn-out canopy can take away from the beauty and functionality of your patio umbrella. If that’s the case, it may be time for a replacement canopy.
To ensure you get the right fit, it is essential to measure your umbrella correctly before ordering a replacement canopy. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you get the right measurements for your new canopy.
Octagon Umbrella Canopy
Step 1: Look for Canopy Manufacturer
While different patio umbrella manufacturers make the same size umbrellas, it is highly unlikely that one company’s canopy will fit on another company’s umbrella. If you aren’t sure where you purchased your umbrella or who the manufacturer is, check the umbrella and umbrella canopy for any manufacturer information. This will come in handy when it comes time to order.
Tip – If you are replacing your canopy due to a defect, check to see if the canopy is under warranty through the manufacturer.
Step 2: Close Your Umbrella
The first thing you will need to do is close your umbrella and make sure it is fully retracted.
Step 3: Measure the Umbrella Rib Length
Next, measure the length of one of the umbrella ribs to the center of the canopy just underneath the finial. The ribs of an umbrella are the framework that supports the canopy and gives it its structure and form.
Step 4: Determine Umbrella Size
Multiply the length of the umbrella rib by two to get the size of your umbrella. For example, if one rib is 54 inches, you have a 108 inch or nine-foot umbrella.
Step 5: Order Your New Umbrella Canopy
Once you know your umbrella manufacturer and overall length, it is time to order your replacement canopy. Double-check that your numbers match the measurements of the replacement canopy you are ordering.

Square or Rectangle Umbrella Canopy
Step 1: Look for Canopy Manufacturer
To reiterate, while different patio umbrella manufacturers make the same size umbrellas, it is highly unlikely that one company’s canopy will fit on another company’s umbrella.
Step 2: Extend Your Umbrella
For square and rectangle umbrellas, the first thing you will need to do is fully extend your umbrella.
Step 3: Measure the Side(s) of the Umbrella
For square umbrellas, measure one side of the perimeter to determine your canopy size. For rectangle umbrellas, measure both the length and width of the canopy to determine size.
Step 4: Order Your New Umbrella Canopy
Once you know your umbrella manufacturer and overall length, it is time to order your replacement canopy. Double-check that your numbers match the measurements of the replacement canopy you are ordering.
If you’re unsure about any of the measurements, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance at info@patioumbrellastore.com or (800) 738-7229.
